• Writing 1 introduces and provides practice in the kinds of critical reading, thinking, and writing required in university course work. In this course, you will analyze academic discourse, develop rhetorical strategies for exposition and argument, practice examination writing, and write and revise papers. Completion with a C or better fulfills the UC Entry Level (Subject A) Writing Requirement.

  • Writing for Business is a course designed to develop the competencies necessary for the production and delivery of effective business communications across a broad category of mediums: written, visual, and oral.
  • Writing 109HU is designed to help juniors and seniors majoring in the humanities develop writing and research skills necessary for success in their chosen fields. Readings address theory, methodology, and formal conventions that inform writing in the humanities. Formal assignments consist of a series of short assignments designed to move students through a research and writing process that culminates in the production of a research-based paper on a self-selected topic of inquiry and a brief formal presentation of findings. This section of Writing 109HU uses the topic of war and peace as a vehicle for addressing these academic and professional skills.


  • Politics, Presidents, and Persuasion: Understanding the Rhetoric of US Elections

    This course will address the analytical skills underlying the research process of academic and professional communities as well as the modes and processes of argumentation for the purpose of persuasion. Through the application of research methods we will have the opportunity to explore and refine our personal political ideologies by finding what is most reasonable to believe in the face of spin, propaganda, sound-bites, and deception.
